ThrustSSC also known as Thrust supersonic car is a British jet car developed by Richard Noble, Glynne Bowsher, Ron Ayers and Jermy Bliss.
On October 15, 1997 Trust SSC hold the world land speed record, it was driven by Andy Green, he is a retired British Air Force fighter (currently). It achieved a speed of 1,228km/h(763mph) and became the first land vehicle to officially break the sound barrier.
It is displayed at the Coventry Transport Museum's in Coventry, England. Later the Trust SSC and Thrust2 was relocated from their position in the museum's spirit of speed gallery to the new Biffa Awards Land speed recorded gallery opened in 2015 as a redevelopment project.
SPECS
The car has the body with 16.5m(54ft) length and 3.7m(12ft) width and weights about 10 tons. The engine is made with two Rolls-Royace Spey turbofan which is Rolls-Royce's spey 202 and Rolls-Royace spey 205 with 223 kN(50,000 lbf), and finally gave a output of 102,000bhp (76 MW) at the measured recorded speed of 341 meters per second, burning around 18 liters/second (4.0 imperial gallons/4.8 US gallons) of fuel. The fuel consumption was about 4.850 liters/100km. The vehicle was operating around 12% of efficiency at its record speed, efficiency being the useful working power (76 MW) divided by thermal power (630 MW).
RECORD
The record run in October 1997 was preceded by extensive test run of the vehicles in autumn 1996 and spring 1997 in the Al-jafr desert (located in Ma'an Governorate) in Jordan, a location unknown before for its capabilities as a test range for high-speed land vehicles.
Later it was moved to the Coventry Transport Museum in Coventry, England. The visitors can drive the 4D motion simulator a computer-generated animation of record breaking run from the perspective of Green.
